Message from the CAHIIM Chair by Merida Johns, PhD, RHIA, HIM ConsultantStrategic Goals—2009 and Beyond As we begin the New Year, the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) is eagerly looking forward to a year of service in advancing the value of health informatics and health information management (HIM) practice through quality education and serving our partner colleges and universities as a means to continuously improve education to meet work force needs. The role of CAHIIM is very different today than when I was an AHIMA vice president ten years ago responsible for accreditation, certification, and education. Changing the title of our accreditation body from “Council” to “Commission” was more than a name change. Our accreditation body moved from an elected body primarily charged with providing consultation and advice to an external administrative body with authoritative responsibility and final decision making power. The inclusion of “Health Informatics” in CAHIIM’s name was also an essential change, enlarging the scope of the Commission. These changes represent a significant departure in what the traditional roles, responsibilities, and organizational structure had been and ones that require different leadership and a new way of thinking about the Commission and its operations. | Notification of APAR Open Cycle Delayed to February
APAR, the annual program assessment report for CAHIIM accredited programs, will open during the month of February and remain open for data input through May. All accredited programs will receive notification by mail of the exact dates and instructions via letter as well as an e-mail when the system is open. Program directors are advised to assemble materials for the report now. With the exception of some functional enhancements and a new category for baccalaureate programs which requests a “yes” or “no” indication of offering a post-baccalaureate certificate, most sections remain as previously established. An extensive workflow design to support staff, Panel and Commissioners’ work beyond program information collection, and a change in delivery date of the certification exam cumulative reports has resulted in moving the opening date forward from the fall term to spring. | CAHIIM Accepted to Membership in INQAAHE
The International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) is a world-wide association of some 200 organizations that are active in the theory and practice of quality assurance in higher education. The great majority of its members are quality assurance agencies that operate in many different ways, although the Network also welcomes (as associate or institution members) other organizations that have an interest in quality assurance in higher education. INQAAHE offers its members the many benefits of being part of an active group of higher education quality assurance workers, providing reassurance, support and assistance in the daily work of accreditation.
