As we approach the end of the year, I will be wrapping up my duties as this year’s CAHIIM chair. It has been an honor to serve on the Commission in this capacity and l have been fortunate to work with the Board of Commissioners and CAHIIM staff. Each member brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table allowing the Commission to collectively meet charges and set goals. In March, CAHIIM celebrated its third birthday as an independent accrediting organization.

Realizing CAHIIM’s potential, a strategic plan was needed for CAHIIM’s development, change, and growth in addition to time spent on daily operations and review of academic programs.  CAHIIM met for a hard-working, structured day and a half to focus on the current year and the following three to five years. A third phase was included to the plan which encompasses assumptions about the future and is subject to annual review.

CAHIIM ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Early Assessment of Impact on HIM Curricula

Realizing that ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS are still in the notice of proposed rule making (NPRM) comments stage, in both an election year and with implementation odds that are strong but not absolute, HIM professionals and educators cannot ignore some early planning. If the rulemaking process has an affirmative outcome, we are still looking at a possible implementation no earlier than 2011.

The following are views from a CAHIIM accreditation standpoint.

CAHIIM Hosts Health Informatics Workgroup Session

The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) determined at its November 2007 meeting that a proactive stance was necessary for an expanded scope of CAHIIM accreditation and to explore the domain of health informatics education. Funding for a Health Informatics (HI) Workgroup was requested and granted by the AHIMA Board of Directors. The target audience for the workgroup included local (Chicago and vicinity) health informatics educators, administrators, and several recognized national leaders in health informatics. CAHIIM 2008 Strategic Planning Session

Realizing that CAHIIM had crafted a transition plan several years ago, but not a "strategic plan" for the future, CAHIIM held a strategic planning session in Chicago, IL in January. Paul Gaston, PhD, trustees professor and former provost of Kent State University, served as facilitator for the strategic planning session. All commissioners agreed this was a tremendous opportunity to discuss in a focused, collegial, candid manner, the formation and growth of CAHIIM, examine the many issues and complexities related to quality academic program accreditation, affirm CAHIIM's role in programmatic accreditation, delegate responsibilities, and establish a guiding direction for the future.  [Read more...]
